Biography
M.I.A. is a British rapper, singer, producer, and activist of Sri Lankan Tamil descent. She was born in London in 1975 and moved to Sri Lanka with her family when she was six months old. She experienced the Sri Lankan Civil War as a child and later fled to India and then back to London as a refugee.
She started her musical career in 2002 and gained fame through the internet with her songs “Sunshowers” and “Galang”. Her music combines elements of alternative, dance, electronic, hip hop, and world music with electronic instruments and samples. Some of her most popular songs are “Paper Planes”, “Bad Girls”, “O, Saya”, and “Franchise”. She has won several awards, including two MTV Video Music Awards, two ASCAP awards, and an MBE for her services to music.
She is also known for her controversial political views and actions, such as supporting the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka, wearing a burqa at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, and being arrested for immigration violations in 2011. She has been nominated for an Academy Award and a Grammy Award in the same year.
